I have this problem on 7.10 using 8600M GT. I believe the importance might need to be upgraded; when the machine decides to fsck, or if there is an error, I am left looking at a black screen for an extremely long time sometimes with no idea of what's happening or what to do to fix it, with only my guessing that it's doing a fsck from the hard disk activity light. And if there's a critical error, I probably won't know it at all.
