If we take the statements at face value, they had already renewed the show for a third season before Taylor Tomlinson decided to leave.
That tells me that CBS was happy to have it around while it was there, but didn't want to spend the time and money involved in either finding a new host for After Midnight or developing a new show. Or they've just spent two years trolling the Redditors who refuse to admit that Chris Hardwick isn't walking through that door.
