So, who would be the right bandleader?  Thinking of the other bandleaders in
late night, past and present, I don't know if any of them really made (or make)
the host more palatable to the audience.  Johnny and Conan have opted for them
as additional joke participants/targets.  Leno used one as a punching bag, and
the others were not so inclined (for different reasons).

Paul, and to a greater extent, Max Weinberg, both served as partners in crazy
to their hosts, but it seems you want Batiste to do something else?  Did the
segment with Jon and Stephen in New Orleans from October do this?

The case could be made that Questlove is there to acknowledge the unspoken
truth that Fallon is a high-functioning doofus, but that's not the same thing.
Reggie Watts...I have no idea what role he's playing, and I suspect Reggie
likes it that way.  I find Fred Armisen unfunnier than a thousand flaming suns,
so I really can't assess his role on Late Night.  La Bamba (trombone player)
takes the place of Max for Conan, and Kimmel's bandleader doesn't do much
outside of musical stuff.

As a big fan of the man and the show, this is one reason why I harp so much on
Batiste - it seems like the right band leader and band could help make him more
friendly to a mass audience; indeed, it seems like he thinks Batiste is that
right guy, and he just isn't.
