Hi
It looks like this is a Broadcom NIC. Does your Linux distro recognise the
exact card. If not, I am guessing it might not let you set the options you want.
Which is where I come back to my original suggestion of leaving it at a default
auto-negotiate, and getting the switch at the far end to also auto-negotiate,
but to only offer 1000-FD. We've done similar things in the past for 100-FD kit
(and I do know that gigabit ethernet addressed auto-negotiate as part of the
spec, so this shouldn't be necessary). Another option is to see if HP have
later firmware for the NIC. Finally, if you have access to the machine, you
could install an extra NIC if you have a spare slot, or replace the NC105 if
it's not on the motherboard. I've had good luck with Intel cards.

That makes me think that this server only has 100Mbit ethernet, not
GigE at all. As Brandon says, try the 'sudo mii-tool -v' and see what
it says.
It might also be fixed by using one of the other options to force the
card to re-negotiate the link. Can you post a full 'dmesg' for the
system so we can look at the hardware? lspci -nnnv as well?
