That's what you'll hear if your punctuation is set to none. If you change
your punctuation to all or some then you'll hear 160(1), that's "160 left
paren 1 right paren". This means you have 160 characters left in the
first part of of your text message.
In your earlier example, your text message was 10 characters long. I
wonder if it was saying 150(1) (That's with a five.) instead of 160(1)
(with a 6). I'd suggest giving it another try with a slightly longer text
message. See if you hear it roll over from 150 to 149.

You're probably right, but I do know Talks used to handle this
differently in older versions. For example, I remember when it would
announce the number of remaining characters after every character you
typed. 5.00.3 and 5.01.1 probably both handle it the same way though.
What does it say when you press Talks followed by the long press of soft
key 2 before you start typing anything? Maybe your text messages start
out with 170 characters instead of 160.

While you are in the open message do a talks then long press of soft
key 2
and that should give you what you want.
