You're probably right, but I do know Talks used to handle this differently in older versions. For example, I remember when it would announce the number of remaining characters after every character you typed. 5.00.3 and 5.01.1 probably both handle it the same way though. What does it say when you press Talks followed by the long press of soft key 2 before you start typing anything? Maybe your text messages start out with 170 characters instead of 160.

While you are in the open message do a talks then long press of soft key 2
and that should give you what you want.

Is there a way of checking how many characters you have written in a
text? Say you're writing a tweet and you want to know if you've reached
140 characters. I thought someone had suggested one, but back then I
didn't do twitter.
