When that question occurs to you that you need to work around the 255 character limitation by using an unbounded number of alternative keys, each coming from an unbounded domain, then it's an indicator that you are overdoing it. I think it is kind of "okay" to list some key generic types as long as it fits the 255 character limit (but honestly, if you are over 64, that's already a smell that you are using OSM for something that it isn't).
