Following up on the original question, 2019 Edition of NFPA 13 specifically
states that listed piping material other than that covered in the table shall
be hydraulically calculated (27.5.1.2). So that puts the nail in that coffin.

For the bonus question, I haven't found anything specifically addressing this
in the code. If you were doing a density/area calculation, then the small room
rule wouldn't necessarily increase the flow/pressure required at a sprinkler 9
feet from the wall, so I would think that it would still be allowed using pipe
schedule method. At least, I think you could reason with someone about it. I
don't think that would be the same as, say, trying to use extended coverage
sprinklers.

Excellent point. Thank you Todd & Kyle.

So now on to the bonus round: On a pipe schedule system, can section
10.2.5.2.3.1 (2019) be applied to allow a sprinkler to be up to 9' from a
single wall?

In 13, the pipe schedule tables are specified for steel or copper only. 27.5.3.4

Oh knowledgeable ones: Is there anything in NFPA 13 that prohibits the use of
CPVC pipe/fittings in the remodel of an old pipe schedule system? The intent
is to maintain the pipe schedule and not provide calculations. I'm not aware
of anything, but I don't want this to bite me later.
