Craig - I see this when a main test is required by the AHJ on any system supplied by a fire pump system.   I also recommend testing all water flow devices with the fire pump system in its normal operating condition.

Each system is considered a separate system. Each system is supposed to have an annual main drain test. On acceptance test, the main drain is supposed to be recorded on the General Information sign for each system and the Aboveground Test Certificate. The original main drain test data is then to be used for comparison to annual NFPA 25 test data. I recommend main drain test are conducted with the fire pump in its normal operating condition.

John,

I’m not sure of a situation or purpose where you’d have the pump running and be discharging flow through a 2” system drain.

A drain on the fire pump discharge piping to be able to drain it before doing maintenance would be helpful.

Craig - 100% agree. All systems need a main drain piped to an acceptable place of discharge that can handle full flow with the fire pump system (if provided) operating.

There should also be a method to drain the fire pump system piping.

I’m not sure I understand the correlation between system drains and the subject of this post?

There needs to be a drain from each sprinkler system valve, wet, dry, PA or Deluge, doesn’t matter.

There needs to be a drain in the fire pump room.

Installing a Dry system fed from a pump and while running the 2” drain outside the building from the dry valve it dawned on me we never show a drain for the wet system. I’m assuming that’s taken care of from the casing drain on the pump?
