It must modify them, because your suggestion (spamassassin -t < tmp)
generates the same results as previously.  Using the bounce function
of Pine also generates new headers--I had noticed this, but for some
reason didn't put two and two together.  Thanks for the explanation,
I *really* like understanding what's happening!
