Any advice on how to improve performance would be appreciated.
What I do is first find out what is causing the delay. Using spamd, I restart the daemon with the -D switch and then watch the log for where the delay is happening.
FWIW, since upgrading to 2.6, I have seen message take as little as .5 second up to over a minute. I just haven't had time to debug and see where it's slowing down at times...
