If you have the bandwidth and if you really want to satisfy your ego, consider teergrubing/tar pitting using an appropriate MTA such as Exim 4, SA-Exim 3.0, Postfix 2.0 or suchlike.

I'd heard of tar pitting - it's an attractive idea. I just feel that as
spammers are putting me to the inconvenience of spamming me, I should put
_them_ to some inconvenience.

That's what tar pitting does. However, remember that 99% of all spam (spam is not legitimate opt-in e-mail stuff) use non-returnable addresses; you'll never really get to know who they are - it's effing useless blocking dial up IPs, there are too many of them - and their shoot is sent via socks, http and open relay machines. I'd say that tar pitting is only useful for ego-building, makes you feel macho/macco, builds you up for that date tonight. Make use of DNSBLs and/or RDBNLs.

I'm using a pre-configured sendmail that comes
with Slackware. I don't feel like installing a different MTA, but I see from
teergrube that I can use a wrapper for an existing mta - presumably
including sendmail. I'll look at it further

That's your privilege. Learning new MTAs is for prof mailadmins or people with inquisitive minds. I can configure Exim 4 or Postfix 2.0 to do things that Sendmail people never dreamed was possible.

- I'm on a 500K broadband with
NTL, will that provide enough bandwidth?

Same as a water mains pipe or a 35 AMP fuse. What are you going to put through it, and what reserve does it have?

I'd say that the whole idea was misconceived in the first place. Kill spam one way or another, don't try to punish the perpetrators - the latter idea is useless. Leave that to the legislators, given time it will come.

Best,

Tony
