I didn't write that, Will; are you listening? ;) Anyway, what is written
there doesn't reflect the reality; we rely on fontconfig to get a list
of system fonts (but, unlike XeTeX, we do the rest of indexing
ourseleves). So, it is fontconfig's dut
elves, but this is likely to change later (the issue is more
complicated under *nix systems as one needs to parse fontconfig
configuration files).

I can safely say you are exaggerating too much here. One can easily install
texlive from tug on Ubuntu like any other Unix(-like) system, nothing special
here. Please refer to texlive documentation for installation instructi
that you have an old version of the font installed somewhere.
Having to different version of the same font installed is known to cause
this kind of issues with xetex, deleting the old version(s) is enough
to solve this issue.

embedded. You either have to contact the foundry about this or use
another font (You can also edit the font yourself and r

AFAIK, epup is just a subset of xhtml with a subset of css2, so IMO not
a kind of output format that is very well suited for TeX (well, I hardly
consider html an output format at all, the output is what the browser
renders out of it).
