Hi Virginia,
your problem does not look like a shell problem. Better you check if you both
have write access to the directory "/tmp/.X11-unix". If not you will get those
messages.
BTW, Solaris sets from time to time the access back to "read-only" for "other"
without user interaction.

I also try to start an "Xsession" (to get a login screen), but it didn't work
(The Xvnc-server started but the viewer only showed a kind of blank screen). So
I replaced "Xsession" with "dtsession" in the $HOME/.vnc/startup-script and
started the vncserver with the
