same problem under Precise. There were two interfaces under
/sys/class/brightness: intel_backlight and panasonic. I think the
XF86BrightnessUp only tried to adjust the intel_backlight, which did

brigthness works and screen is fine.
then i installed the nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version current)
(recommended)
The FN brightness function doesn't work, but the screen is fine.

This is hitting both my home server and my work desktop hard.
I can freeze my 64 bit 12.04 desktop by opening a few windows (firefox,
thunderbird, rhythmbox) and holding down alt-tab for a few seconds. My
home server is freezing about every 24-48 hours and my software RAID
isn't very happy about

back to normal - for example, opening a new tab in gnome-terminal takes
two or three seconds to complete whereas before such an operation was
