The 11.10 CD would not install from Try It mode. The box hung again
with the same symptoms: no keyboard and mouse (both are USB) and the
display frozen in some odd resolution.

So I made a 12.04 CD (from a Windows box) and booted it and tried to
install, and got the same thing: The box hung again with the same
symptoms: no keyboard and mouse (both are USB) and the display frozen in
some resolution.

At this point, I must explain that I had started with Ubuntu 9, upgraded
to 10, then to 11, and these on-line incremental upgrades had all gone
fine. Only the incremental upgrade from 11 to 12 failed.

Why a fresh install of Ubuntu 11 would screw up is beyond me, since the
incremental upgrade from 10 to 11 works!

I got upset and put in Windows Vista Ultimate, which one of my kids had
given me when he upgraded to Windows 7 to play his silly games on. The
install finished correctly but Windows complained that it did not have a
driver for my Ethernet chip. Come on, this is a Dell box with a common
Broadcom Ethernet chip! And Windows can't handle it?!? Oh well,
neither could Ubuntu 11 or 12 (for different reasons).

So then I went back to Ubuntu 10, and installed that fresh. It works!
I am sticking with Ubuntu 10!

I was just growing used to the Unity interface in 11, and I really like
the Ubuntu 11 software package manager. But, I am used to the Bluecurve
GUI, and I hate the ribbon across the top in Ubuntu 11: I believe each
window should have its own menu bar at the top of that window. So, sum
total, I am sticking with Ubuntu 10 long-term!

Thank you for your kind attention.
