Sorry but I am exceeding thick. What do you mean by repo? The only items
I can find with synaptic appear to files needed to enable VMware to work
and not VMware itself which, I understand, is not free.

Solved. Essentially, you need to set up and mount the usb file system
and set the right permissions. I've written a note about how to do this

I use Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-15-generic.
Is it possible by the repository address?
Coz the mirror may not update.
I use 'Main Server'.

On the error message that pops up there is a command that needs to be run as
sudo. I'm not at a buntu machie at the mo so I can't get the exact message
but it's something like /etc/init.d/vbox drvseup.
That will compile the kernel modules for you and should get vbox working -
double check as well
I have virtualbox running perfectly on hardy with the 2.6.24-19 kernel,
and I had it running on the 2.6.24-18 kernel as well. I didn't have any
problems setting it up, although after using the OSE version I got the
PUEL version because I wanted to be able to share a USB device.

I should add that VirtualBox seems to have installed OK in (System
Tools); I've added myself and root to virtualbox in Users and Groups;
and the app starts and se

thinking of having a go at this, too. I notice that the file you

I have hit a snag. Using synaptic, I installed VirtualBox and it
certainly starts up OK. However, after setting things up, I cannot start
the virtual set up but get an error message saying that I am missing
some kernel file. I must have missed something but I am not sure what it
is. Could you help

Thank you all for the swift response from which I gather that VirtualBox
is the preferred option. I have a proper disc of Windows XP Pro with key
so that is no problem. I will give things a go over the next few days
and report back.

Much like Michael I also use virtual-box, but I would add that depending
on your circumstances you may need the PUEL edition. This is not open
source, but it is still free (as in beer) for personal use. The main
feature it has that the open source edition does not is that it can
share USB devices b
I installed virtualbox/winXP yesterday, it works really well. I am running
photoshop in it and the performance is good. You do need a reasonably beefy
machine, I have a Dual core athlon(around 2ghz) and 3gb of ram.
The only thing that wasn't working was USB, but this can probably be fixed

Hi,
I prefer to run my windows applications under Vmware (or any other
virtualization software).
I find it very reliable (and trendy)

I want to run a windows application, which will not run under wine, in
Ubuntu 8.04. There appear to be a number of techniques and I would be
grateful for suggestions as to the most reliable, in your opinion.
Thank you.
