Solved. Essentially, you need to set up and mount the usb file system and set the right permissions. I've written a note about how to do this derived from various HowTos, and will post it if anyone's interested. I'm now able to update my TomTom Go in virtual WinXP. Phew. (Pain in the proverbial, seeing as the Go runs on GNU/linux but TomTom only offers a Win-based updater. :-( ) Thanks for all the help.
