I've seen the same problem on Ubuntu 8.10 after upgrading. (Used to work fine
in 8.04). The problem occurs with MSN, Yahoo, and in fact any network.. not
just IRC.
If I go into Pidgin preferences and choose "No Sound", the problem goes
away.
Running gdb over Pidgin, I identified that a dead
PS. Sorry, forgot to mention that I am running it natively.. ie. NOT in kvm.
It just happens that my soundcard still isn't supported (SB XFI). There are no
sound drivers loaded at all..
(Don't get me started on the creative driver.. ugh)

I tried running the dbus-monitor script, and lshal, under kernel
2.6.30-rc6 too.. Same result, ie. identical to Jeremy's post above.
I did this while on battery power, as I think someone else mentioned
maybe that would make a difference.. but it didn't.

I am seeing this identical problem on an Ubuntu Server 9.04 (Jaunty)
install, whenever there's a brief period of heavy network activity, the
network locks up for a minute, with NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (r8169):
transmit timed out in the logs, followed by a similar stack trace to the

I have managed to reproduce this on a relatively-fresh Lucid install now!
The key part of this was that there was a typo in the fstab, however
this locks up the entire boot process, and didn't under Karmic.
To reproduce:
* Install ubuntu 10.04 desktop amd64 (at least in my case, althoug

it was somehow related to pulseaudio too, but hadn't tried removing the
.pulse folder..
Still, that shouldn't be causing polkitd to spiral out of control, no

polls btrfs to find out the physical devices underlying the filesystem
-- and grub replies with TWO devices, because it's configured as raid1.

Have been reminded of this bug, and thought I'd post a follow-up on my
own experiences.
I noticed that my desktop would run smoothly at first, then once I had a
few windows open, it went slow.
I used the "nvidia-smi" utility to monitor the memory usage on the GPU,
and noticed that as I opened mor
PS. On current desktop, with one browser (Chrome), Thunderbird, Pidgin,
and six terminal windows, I'm using 400 MB of video memory. One could
argue that this is excessive? It implies that you really need a minimum
of 512 MB of video memory to use Compiz now..

Rolling back to 3.10.0 didn't fix the problem after all. What did was
unplugging and replugging the USB Hub I had the USB Audio device plugged into.

I've been running RabbitMQ 2.6.1 and 2.7.0 for a while on 11.10 (and
11.04) without any of these problems.
I'm not sure what is different in my setup compared to yours, but maybe
we can work it out?
I am running with lightdm, not gdm.
NetworkManager is enabled, but the ethernet is managed via

For what it's worth.. RabbitMQ 2.7.0 is available as a .deb file from
rabbitmq.com's own repository, and these days it includes the STOMP (and
other) plugins, just waiting to be enabled.
This works on Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10

This effects me.. however it's not just gnome-terminal, but google
chrome and firefox as well.
Basically, ALL window activity seems to be sluggish now.
This is on a Core i7 system, nVidia Quadro GPU, lots of RAM and a fast
RAID array. It ran very snappily under Gnome in Natty!

Lintian 2.5.0 tries to call a "fail()" subroutine in certain conditions,
however no such routine has ever been declared, and so the code crashes.

I'm disappointed in Ubuntu's decision not to fix this..
I find the alternative sleep time of 200ms to be far more sensible, rather than
having ksmd burn thru CPU cycles constantly.
