Public bug reported: I was running ubuntu 12.10 successfully, but upgraded a couple of days ago to 13.04. Immediately after upgrading, and on subsequent attempts to boot, the system would hard freeze during boot-up.
Debugging led me to observe kernel segfaults occurring, caused by the snd_hda_codec_hdmi kernel module. I blacklisted this module in /etc/modprobe.d and then my system boots and works fine. This seems to be a regression from the old 3.5.0-27-generic kernel to the current 3.8.0-19-generic kernel in 13.04, and is quite significant. (People without decent skills would not have been able to get the system to boot at all after an upgrade) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 13.04 Package: linux-image-3.8.0-19-generic 3.8.0-19.30 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.8.0-19.29-generic 3.8.8 Uname: Linux 3.8.0-19-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 2.9.2-0ubuntu8 Architecture: amd64 AudioDevicesInUse: USER PID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/controlC2: tobyc 2352 F.... pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: tobyc 2352 F.... pulseaudio CRDA: Error: command ['iw', 'reg', 'get'] failed with exit code 1: nl80211 not found.
