My notebook is pretty slow (867MHz Crusoe), so I want to use
Enlightenment instead of whatever Gnome suggests. E starts up fine on
its own (and is noticeable faster), but I get an error trying to start

I experience the same the same too. I have installed ubuntu 6 and it
doesnt allow me to switch to other resolution other than 640x480. my
monitor is capable of 1440x900 resolution. im using ati all in wonder

poor visual quality is that xv isn't being used). I have an ATI 7500 in
a T30 using the opensource drivers. The same videos worked fine in Edgy

Because there shouldn't be one. There was no warning when the default
X switched from XFree to X.org, because non-broken programs don't know
the difference. There is no warning when upgrading gcc from 2.x to
3.x to 4.x, despite it being well known that that breaks MANY build
processes.

Ok after further testing, and attempting to use the same device on
another machine, it turns out that the oops is an SMP related issue.
Attempting to use the speakup_dectlk module on another machine with the
serial device states that the device cannot be found, even though I am
able to send it data
If I remove deskbar, and login, nothing hangs.
If I start deskbar before trackerd is done checking its cache, a python
error is triggered (uncaught exception, something about starting
trackerd) and it hangs.
If I start deskbar after trackerd is done, everything is fine.

I'm glad I can report: This issue is resolved.
I was able to find out what was causing this behaviour: A third-party
installer script (which was run as root) changed the ownership of
several subfolders under ~/.local/share/ to "root", and thus, there was
no write access any more.

I can confirm this bug with an Intel G965 X3000 GMA. I'm using xorg-
server-core-1.1.1-0ubuntu13 and linux-2.6.20-6-generic. My architecture
is AMD64.
