I used the "netconsole" method and got the following crash report
with Ubuntu 12.04 daily build and the "Nouveau" driver:

I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 the daily build and I confirm that the

Ok , I'll try to test it on the daily build for 12.04, but I don't see
how that will help find the bug in 10.04.
About the mainline kernels, which one shouls I test ? The absolutely latest, or
the one that maps to my current kernel.

I tried the "netconsole" method and this one provided some results.
Here is the last part of the log, corresponding to the crash:

I also removed the module "ati_agp" using:
rmmod ati_agp
before playing the video, but the crash still occured.

Linux freezes when
In Windows XP the crashes do not happen when playing videos.
So far we know the following:
-no crashes in Windows XP
-regular, reproducible crashes when playing videos using the NVidia drivers:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.40
-instantaneous crash
Christopher, I'll try to do what you ask when I get a chance; right now I'm
using Ubuntu 10.04.
I'll see if I can install the daily build of 12.04.
Meanwhile, I did some more testing: I removed the NVidia driver using its
"--uninstall" option.
Then, I did
modprobe nouveau
and the SYSTEM
