I definitely fixed my problem on my 650U on Ubuntu 12.04 with the help
of the sane-devel mailing list. Don't know if that method (that requires
re-defining the motors parameters) would apply to the Lide20 also, and I
don't know if using wrong values on the lide20 could damage the scanner
hardware,
I have the same problem, now in Ubuntu 13.10, with my CanoScan LIDE 100
In previous versions of ubuntu (say 12.10 or before), the scanner used
to work reasonably well with "Simple Scan' but would jam in xsane. Now
in 13.10 it gets stuck in the middle of the scan and the header won't
return to the
What is not clear to me is if TLJones' method made his scanner work
again (and definitively?) in Ubuntu, or not...

I've had the same problem for some time - the scanner makes a terrible
noise and is stuck in the middle instead of going back to it's "starting
position". I tried downloading the drivers from Canon and the software
but still the problem was there, but I've been certain the scanner
wasn't broken an
Still not solved in Ubuntu 10.10 (CanoScan N650U).

I think this has to do with the axis mapping of the unit. Mine makes odd
sounds before the scan, and then scans only a small area.
In the bottom left of the xsane control window, it says 10.30 cm x
7.62cm.
I can go into advanced options and see that there are zeroes in the top

I have this same problem with my CanoScan N650U scanner and Jaunty.
After only a few scans (or perhaps only one; it seems to be random) the
scanning element starts buzzing loudly at the point where it is due to
return after completing a scan (or sometimes just as it commences
scanning). It sounds a
I am using the latest release 9.04 & CanoScan N656U scanner. Same
problem. Did anybody found a solution?

This appears to be fixed in Ubuntu 8.10. This bug should probably be
closed. I haven't tested it with 8.04.

My LIDE 60 does this on Gutsy. It completes a scan, the just makes a grumbling
noise and xsane is locked up. It worked fine in Feisty.
I have just discovered it only does this if more than one page is set top scan
as Tormod found. If 2 pages are selected, the grinding noise continues for
about 3
I also have grinding noises on a LIDE 60, but only when it tries to
crawl back again after the first scan when I have chosen to scan several
pages. If I choose to just scan one page, there is no problem...

The problem described in Bug #85488 is due to a change in the USB driver
in the kernel, and that's what the scanbuttonsd fix is about (it keeps
the USB port from sleeping on the job). HOWEVER this effect was not
noticed in Edgy or Dapper, so if you're having the grinding noise in
those releases it'

Bump.
This is really frustrating, because my scanner only works less than half the
time. I saw that someone was having the same issue on FC5:

Hopefully the version of SANE in Edgy will have better support for this

Same probleme here, on an installed and up to date ubuntu 6.06.Weird

stop is to disconnect usb cable...

I have the exact same issue under installed Kubuntu 6.06. The scanner is
"jammed" and unusable, the weird noises are terrifying. There are
several threads in ubuntuforums.org where is mentioned that the problem
appears only in Dapper and not in Hoary.
