My LIDE 60 does this on Gutsy. It completes a scan, the just makes a grumbling noise and xsane is locked up. It worked fine in Feisty. I have just discovered it only does this if more than one page is set top scan as Tormod found. If 2 pages are selected, the grinding noise continues for about 3 minutes and then it is functioning again. Kooka behaves the similarly. 1 page set, it works fine.
