Guys, this is just a total shot in the dark and probably won't work, but
has anybody tried installing the nvidia-modprobe package? I did this
some time ago (I think during 14.10) to fix issues with Darktable.
Around the same time, but possibly only later, the second-screen issue
disappeared for me.
For Darktable, I'm pretty sure all you'll need to do is install the
nvidia-modprobe package after you activate the Nvidia drivers. It'll
then work without any further ado. Let me know if that does the trick
for you - it's been working for me over the past 3 Ubuntu releases,
across 3 PCs.

The workaround in #14 used to work for me before 15.04 and before buying
my new PC (both of which coincided). Now, this bug is here to stay, and
none of the workarounds above fix it.

Affected as well. I installed Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit yesterday night on my
self-assembled desktop PC and have seen the issue a few times since. I

Still occurs on my system even after applying all the workarounds listed
above. Reinstalled gnome-raw-thumbnailer from the repos again, too. When
going into icon mode, I see blank rectangles in Nautilus.
Oddly, it works just swell on my laptop PC. Same distro on both
machines: Ubuntu 11.10 64 bit.
Another screenshot: when pressing CTRL-ALT-F7 (back to graphical mode),
more corruption is visible. The bits I highlighted in red are a flashing
cursor.

I can now say that, when the corruption occurs, as soon as I press
Enter, I am thrown back to the login screen (and then the bug is gone).
I have disabled the automatic login in Ubuntu (btw, changing account
settings crashes Gnome Shell: panel and window decorations disappear,

there is a console "hiding" behind the GUI. When I type anything, then

a location (e.g. an xls file), the launcher will not appear in the menu.
It appears that Ubuntu completely rejects that kind of launcher in the
Main Menu, while it accepts them on the panels.

Just as an addition, when selecting "Best Shapes" and then setting the
hinting to "Slight" in the Details options, fonts will look great and
the OOO corruption is gone (can't say about Lotus Notes).
Another way to "fix" it is to disable font antialiasing in OOO's View
