I just wanted to add that I had the same problem for a while so I

with a full load. I deduced the only time I had issues with it

No, I ended up having to reformat to fix the problem. Then it happened
again so I just upgraded to 9.04.

I executed the command you gave me but I also need to let you know that I
attempted upgrading to 9.04 to help the situation. It didn't. However when I
use alsamixer and I unmuite the "Spread Front to Surround and Center/LFE"
listing I get high volume out of one speaker and distorted low sound
Yes I can definitely confirm this problem also. I upgraded to 8.1 from
8.04 and like an idiot used the proprietary ATI drivers. lesson learnt.
Anywas I basically did what everyone else did: find everthing to do
with Radeon and ATI ( i used synaptic then used the terminal to fully
purge the crap)
BTW, there is nothting wrong with your computer, it's just the default
screen effects are turned on. If you have hardware problems, under
System>Admin>Hardware testing, it's an app that tests parts of the
computer and sends a log directly to launchpad. Howver definitely try

What you have is onboard graphics which use just enough CPU to perform
the basic computing needs. It takes some of the load off of the CPU.
