Public bug reported:

I am running Hardy Heron on a compaq presario with 640mb ram and an
nvidia TNT2 graphic card with 8mb onboard, and am using Hardy Heron. I
installed the nvidia legacy drivers and could not get direct rendering
or 3d effects. I then used envy to fix the problem, which it seemed to
since I never got the nvidia splash on startup or direct rendering to
work until using it. However, I cannot use nvidia settings because it
says I do not have nvidia-xorgconfig. When I try to install Xorg using
apt-get or synaptic, in uninstalls the current drivers and I get crappy
resolution and no direct rendering. I think this may be a bug with
envy, but not sure. Also, in the Xorg file, the header says that this
is not a real xorg file and I should download it from another place.
When I follow the instructions, the same thing happens, all the drivers
get uninstalled and I have to use envy to get any graphics acceleration.
