just before sending the above report, screen saver "Hyperspace" was
active, having far less than 1 fps. After moving the mouse and pushing a
key on the keyboard, it took ~ 30 seconds to actually exit the screen

I'm not sure if this is a bug or something for the wishlist. But I think
that Mahjongg used to tell me if I reached an unsolvable status of the
puzzle.
Now it just offers me to shuffle the puzzle, but it does not recognize

Prior to this, I started evolution from a console. I deleted some files
in junk folder, then evolution crashed, the first attachment is copy &
paste of console output.
After that, I started evolution from console again and deleted mails in
junk
