I started update process and came back an hour later to a blank screen.
After reboot Ubuntu was loading but instead of login it came to a black
screen again. Safe mode works, but
Youtube workaround:
At http://www.youtube.com/html5/ click on Join HTML5 trial.
All youtube videos back to normal! The idea is that Flash is going away
either way...

Peter, try to MUTE then UNMUTE the audio in the volume control. I need to do

IT WORKS!
Kudos to michael37, connected laptop via wired network, and all system updates
went through.
Once System Updates completed, the wireless driver has been fixed, and now I
have no more lock ups with OpenSUSE.
next step: reinstalling Ubuntu, and once that works too I will close
this bug.
I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04 -- both froze before
installation even started, even "verify disk" does not work. (and the
disk is ok, i checked on other PC)
I successfully installed OpenSUSE --- it has the same problem Works only
until I start "Software Update"
