1. solution proposed on forum:

does not help.
2. I found the conditions that lead to crash: any sort of download
a) any download on konqueror (browser that came with kubuntu)
b) any download on Firefox
c) Update Manager download of updates, crashes on "8 of 201"
** Summary changed:
- ubuntu 9.10 crashes freezes locks up a few minutes after boot
+ ubuntu 9.10 locks up during any web client or "Update Manager" download
