I had a similar result trying to install on a VirtualBox VM. If I
remove the virtual CD before rebooth it produeced an error message but
locked up before I could hit file bug report. If I let it run it
crashed on shutting down the installation boot.

I broke down and put a DVD drive into that system and it worked.
I am still convinced the bootloader that is written to the USB is
incompatible with our motherboards.
Like I said in the original post the forum thread covers all the things
I've tried (thanks to OldFred for many of the ideas). The

the install finished without error and reboots just fine (Virtual Box).

This is a known issue with VNC and its installer. The problem is there
is a keyboard shortcut set that minimizes the window. If you go to
System/preferences/keyboard shortcuts and disable it, VNC works much
