I think I've found a more descriptive error message in
/var/log/gdm/:0.log
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/vboxvideo_drv.so

(EE) module ABI major version (9) doesn't match the server's version (10)
(II) Unloading vboxvideo
(EE) Failed to load module "vboxvideo" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.
Although Virtual Box running on Lucid shows no updates. I'll see what I
can find.
