sand, overall tire width is more important than 584 v. 622. I put some
Schwalbe Racing Ralph¹s 29x2.4s on and really noticed a difference in
flotation v. 26x2.0s AND 29x2.0s.

I think the things that would really make this a "road bike" to me are:
--steeper angles up front, shorter chainstays out back, and a lighter
tubeset.

poop with a rack and moderate load. So limiting things to fender mount

We had an all paved ride in San Diego in August, but didn't fare any better

It's interesting to note that one of the few modern "mountain bike"
designers specializing in fully rigid bikes, Jeff Jones, uses many of the
same design features as Rivendell to smooth out the ride:
--highish bars
--slackish seat tube angle
--shortish top tube
--super plump tires

I can think of a few advantages:
(1) Dishless wheel (with Phil "Riv" Hubs)
(2) Works easier with friction shifting, if that's your thing.
That said, I run cassettes on all my bikes. I have been tempted by the new
Phil "Riv" Hubs though.

Those old-school handlebar bottle holders really make a lot of sense. I have
