In windows, linux and probably mac it is much easier to select the option "US Int. keyboard with dead keys" on a US keyboard . So you type first ~ followed by n resulting in ñ. This works similar for ë,  ü, â  and so on. If you want to to type only ~ you have to give a space after it. Henk Op
