I think it’s the subway entrance leading to the RER (not the Metro, although perhaps it was back then) station called Auber, on the corner of rue Auber and rue Scribe.
Above the man’s left shoulder there are two blue street name signs on the wall. I can’t make out the names at the low resolution of the photo. But above his right shoulder is a bus stop and you can make out the name of the stop - Opera - which is near rue Auber. There is still an Olympic Airways office listed at 3, rue Auber although the building now appears to be a Museum (but probably just a shop with prétentions) of Perfume. A bit of hunting with Google Maps shows the two street name plates at the corner of rues Auber and Scribe, and at ap event level is a subway entrance with decorative railings that match your photo. The bus stop is no longer there, but there is one called Opera nearby.
