Try Gold Wave, since your space is limited, it may be the easiest solution.
You might want to try out a free solution, cdex, available from:
http://www.jfwlite.com/programs
which can record from your computer directly into mp3 format. If you're

Your definitely on the right list for this. I recently did this and got
a lot of help on it, it is definitely doable with the hardware you have. I
have a machine with 256 mb of ram and a 20 gig hard disk and it worked fine.

which is a stereo y jack. running from two RCA males to a single eighth inch
maile(headphone jack). You do not want to record from the headphone jack of a
walkman because of the hum you would get.

If you are able to hook up your tape player to the computer, then yes it
could work. However, the quality may not be as good as you would like., So
I would suggest that you look at using a hifi tapedeck to achieve what you
want.
