Hello Sue, Your definitely on the right list for this. I recently did this and got a lot of help on it, it is definitely doable with the hardware you have. I have a machine with 256 mb of ram and a 20 gig hard disk and it worked fine. How much are you planning to bring over i mean length of the tape? What i use is a program called Goldwave, as recommended by several on this list. I love it, there's in my opinion a lot to learn, but you can tackle just what you need and learn the more advanced stuff later. You'll need a cable going from the RCA outs on your tape deck, and i don't recommend a walk man, if you have one a stereo deck would be best. Anyway, the cable, and again was pointed out by a member of this list, is called a Stereo Y jack, it has two RCA connections that go in the RCA outs on the stereo deck, to an 1/8 inch connector on the other end, that goes in to the line in on your sound card. Hth Dave.
