I am using almost the same setup as mentioned by the others mentioned here,
but I have used a patch cable and am able to use either a headphone jack on
a walkman, or the output on a library for the blind tape player for playing
tapes. This doesn't make what they told you wrong, it is just another way
of doing things with what you have. Let me know if I can be of further
assistance.

Hello Sue,
Your definitely on the right list for this. I recently did this and got
a lot of help on it, it is definitely doable with the hardware you have. I
have a machine with 256 mb of ram and a 20 gig hard disk and it worked fine.

How much are you planning to bring over i mean length of the tape?
What i use is a program called Goldwave, as recommended by several on
this list. I love it, there's in my opinion a lot to learn, but you can
tackle just what you need and learn the more advanced stuff later.
You'll need a cable going from the RCA outs on your tape deck, and i
don't recommend a walk man, if you have one a stereo deck would be best.
Anyway, the cable, and again was pointed out by a member of this list, is
called a Stereo Y jack, it has two RCA connections that go in the RCA outs
on the stereo deck, to an 1/8 inch connector on the other end, that goes in
to the line in on your sound card.
    Hth
Dave.
