solution. Being a serious ITunes detracter to begin with I abandoned the
attempt and switched to max. It's a better ripper anyway and if you really
want to you can import to your ITunes library using max.

No. Mine chare=ge on my mac just fine. It just draws power from the
usb port. In the case of my mbp, it does this even when the computer
is turned off which could be deadly if the computer isn't plugged in.

hough I've set it to save scans
in the pictures folder in my home folder I don't see them being saved
there. The preview button scans from the flat bed, but no matter what
I do, the scan button is always greyed out.

Ah, this problem happens when browsing is set to group mode. Try
switching back to DOM mode and that will fix the problem with the
unfortunate side effect that it will slow your browsing back down to
the dark age of windows screen readers.
