I finally got VMWare Fusion running! I guess I complained enough, because they
called me back within an hour, had me set up a remote access program, and did
everything for me. I'm still not overly impressed with their support,
but at least they fixed this.

I have done this in the past week though using the Lion OS. The disk does have
to be partitioned very specifically and Disk Utility hides the partitioning
scheme in the option button.
Take a look at the partition tab of Disk Utility and hopefully you will
understand.
