Just to wrap up this thread, I got the option key issue sorted out. Somehow,
and I have no idea how, the keyboard input got switched to Unicode Hex. I
switched it back to US, and now the option key is working as it should. Phew!

As it turned out, I had accidentally enabled my mouse keys. That is not a good
thing to do, if you are not expecting it. I’d never done it before, so I didn’t
