I haven't had to download anything. As for opening up links in mail, I find
that once interacted with the text, I have to press VO+Space at least twice
before it launches Safari to view the contents of the link.

Another user reported the same problem. Going to the View Menu in Safari and
enabling the toolbar put things right again.
As to links, they are still working fine here. be sure you are interacting with

I'm not sure if their is more recent accessible version out there. But to
select a piece of audio like in the example you gave, you can use the left and
right brackets. Press the left bracket at the beginning and the right at the
end of the part you want to select.

Let me put this to you frankly, me and Audacity aren't friends at all.:-) I
don't at all like the way Audacity works, but since everyone have a personal
