You may be able to find a deal still on pro tools 9 for $450 US. Having some kind of control surface really helps though so you might end up spending a bit of money on that also. You will find it much much much easier to get things done for sure. Of course if your not doing to much multi track then garageband could work. I haven't tried it yet.
