As babel hasn't had Japanese option, I used to bridge babel and Japanese with Mr. Inagaki's "Japanese package". (i.e. in lyx's preamble section, write \usepackage{babel} \usepackage{japanese} ) I had a look now and Google isn't able to find at least one case where \usepackage{japanese}
