I was thinking that we should encourage lyx2lyx to be distributed in a separate deb/rpm to lyx. Distributions in general are quite reluctant to upgrade applications, but may be persuaded to update lyx2lyx. Even if not, installing a properly packaged deb is somewhat nicer than copying around files.
