You may be onto something because if you recall, when LSA/SP program
was instituted, it was the driver license and self-certify medical,
There is no difference between a special issuance or a regular 3rd
class, when either one expires you can self certify under BasicMed.
That means you assess your health before flight. The class is now
available on AOPA web site as to how to best do that, and I'm sure

What bothers me about the LSA rules is the weight limitation. There's no
significant difference in flying qualities between a Cessna 140, 150, etc.,
and many of the new LSA planes, but the price difference is about $100,000.
Instead of banning these slightly overweight planes, they could have

If you just call the AOPA phone numbers and ask for the medical
certification assistance department they will connect you (most likely to a

fellow named Gary Crump, who has answered almost every time I have called, and
he will answer you questions quicker than waiting for an email.

Todd, I think you are correct almost. If we pilots haven't had a medical within
the last 10 years or we have never had at least a third class medical then we
are required to have one medical exam to establish a beginning health baseline
before starting under this new program for each of us. I'm

Maybe I missed something but I didn't see anywhere he stated he's been
flying without a medical. He said in 60 years of flying he's only had to
show it three times. Unless he said somet

Paul, I was the one that wrote about not being asked for a medical. I am
aware of the problems if in an accident. I only fly my own aircraft. If I
were asked for a med by anyone in charge and I cannot show one, what are

They do not include sport pilots either, these rules are only for private
