Todd, I think you are correct almost. If we pilots haven't had a medical within
the last 10 years or we have never had at least a third class medical then we
are required to have one medical exam to establish a beginning health baseline
before starting under this new program for each of us. I'm sure the intent is
to throw out anyone who may be deemed too unhealthy to be flying an aircraft.
I will agree that flying as a sport pilot, not required to achieve the same
baseline medical, can fly a few hundred pound liter weight certified aircraft
that qualifies as a light sport plane is not that much different than flying a
slightly heavier non qualifying certified aircraft or one that is a qualifying
weight but has a faster landing speed which disqualifies it. Almost nonsensical
in many ways but hell I didn't make up the rules, I'm just forced to live
within them!
The government worry or considered difference for a sport pilot is the weight
and speed of certified or high performance homebuilt aircraft I'm sure.
We all know there are lots of very poor driving and unhealthy people driving
big vehicles on our roads that can probably be more hazardous than a pilot and
his aircraft. A drunk or unhealthy driver seems to have more potential to do
harm to a church bus filled with people than a pilot possibly hitting that same
church bus. A 20 year old texter just did this a few weeks ago here in Texas, I
wonder if he had his baseline medical to make sure he wasn't a dangerous driver
before he went out in his 4X4 truck driving at high speed while swerving all
over the road texting then killed himself and several others as he ran head on
into that bus I mentioned?
