Maybe this could be part of the theme? This way, it can be tweaked by a
theme author but there is no additional UI clutter for the user.

I have Kopete logs going back many years and I very much want to keep
them around. I was going to write my own script for converting them to
the current format but somehow never got around to it. If this
functionality is added to Kopete, I for one will very much appreciate it.

Correct. NetBSD and OpenBSD both have uvc drivers. FreeBSD does not - at
least not yet.
As for making Video4Linux a mandatory dependency: FreeBSD provides the
multimedia/v4l_compat port which provides the standard V4L headers. If

Definitely not. A uvc driver would have to integrate with the USB stack
very tightly. This will have to be done for FreeBSD specifically.

Yes, Solid does work on FreeBSD. HAL works as well and is required to
run KDE.

Does your MSN password contain any non-alphanumeric characters,
especially, a comma? Kopete had a bug where this would lead to login
problems.
Also, if you want to generate debug output, you should reinstall the
net/kdenetwork port with WANT_KDE_DEBUG defined:
portupgrade -f -m -DWANT_KDE_DEBU
