will use lockfiles to prevent different instances of Portage running
from clobbering each other's file. If I'm not mistaken, this is on by

Yes, this problem is solved now. There was a stale file called
/var/lib/init.d/started/mythbackend that made the system think
mythbacked was running when it wasn't. I removed that file and now the
server is running:

Solved - For the record there was apparently a stale file in
/var/lib/init.d/started. I didn't know anything about this directory.
I removed that file using
