I don't know if this is of any help, but I seem to recall running DOS on an old Dell laptop and pressing a key combination, (Fn and F8 possibly, but I wouldn't put money on it) to switch to the external monitor. Being a HP, the key would be different, (maybe F2) but it's got to be worth a try... H

Probably won’t help but make sure the laptop is off, the power supply/charger is connected to the laptop and is plugged into to the power outlet. Also make sure the external monitor is plugged into the laptop’s VGA port and the monitor is on. Now leaving THE LAPTOP SCREEN AND THE MONITOR PLUGGED I
